RTM

RTM stands for Resin Transfer Moulding and is suitable for high volume production for small to medium sized components requiring low to high mechanical properties.

Fibres are laid into the mould as a dry stack of fabric. Sometimes they are pre-pressed to mould shape and held together by a binder. These preforms increase the cycle time of the main mould line which, given the high mould cost of the oftentimes metal moulds can reduce production costs significantly. After top and bottom moulds are closed resin is injected into the mould cavity to impregnate the dry fibre stack. High fibre volume fractions can be achieved with little void content and both sides of the component have a moulded surface.
